Good News For Pensioners: SASSA Old Age Grants Back On Track This September

The South African pensioners are now able to breathe a sigh of relief since SASSA confirmed that the payments of Old Age Grants for the month of September 2025 are now due. Various checks were imposed late 2024 and early 2025, causing further delays in payment processing. However, SASSA now asserts that all remedial provisions have been put in place to ensure that over four million aged beneficiaries are never again paid late. In addition, below is the payment schedule, pay amounts, and smooth payout tips.

September 2025 Payment Calendar:

The Old Age Grant payments will take precedence during the September 2025 payment cycle and thus pensioners should have their money in hand.

  • Old Age Grant: Tuesday, 2 September 2025

For security reasons, beneficiaries are hereby advised not to hurry to collection points on payment days as the funds will remain credited into the beneficiary’s account for seven days. This staggered payment schedule is on the SASSA-wide pay calendar.

Grant Amounts Up-To-Date

Old Age Grant amounts for 2025 are as follows-after deflation on 25th April:

  • Ages 60 to 74: R2,315 per month
  • Ages 75 and Older: R2,335 per month

This small increase represents a partial offset against cost factors and has been considered in the allocation of a budget amounting to R284.7 billion for social grants for the fiscal year 2025/26 to offset price increases for pensioners in basic goods like food, utilities, and healthcare. A higher increase is accorded to those older than 75 on account of greater needs.

Back On Track For Payments

At the beginning of 2025, there was a delay in making payments of the Old Age Grants because of delays in biometric verification, as well as some incorrect bank details. Measures introduced by SASSA thereafter were:

  • Strengthened Verification Systems: Automated systems were put in place to fast-track approvals.
  • New Banking Portal: An online portal for correcting payment details was created and is quite easy to use.
  • More Staff: SASSA offices were staffed up so that queries could be resolved.

On the basis of these developments, payments of the Old Age Grants to 4.2 million beneficiaries (22% of all SASSA beneficiaries) should be made in a timely fashion by September.

How To Access Your Grant

SASSA offers numerous options for payments to cater to the various needs of pensioners:

  • Direct deposits into bank accounts: Other than cash payment, the funds go into the pensioner’s account.
  • SASSA Card: To be used at any ATM or cashless retail outlet like Shoprite and Pick n Pay.
  • Cash at Pay-points: For pensioners residing in rural areas where banks are scarcely found.
  • Mobile Money Transfers: For the tech-savvy pensioner.

Beneficiaries should verify their banking details to avoid delayed payments at srd.sassa.gov.za or by calling 0800 60 10 11.

Smooth Tips For Payout

Pensioners should:

  • Check when payments are due online, using their IDs and registered cell phone numbers.
  • Update their banking and contact particulars immediately to avoid payment interruptions.
  • Report unauthorized deductions because only one 10% deduction is authorisable by the client.
  • Withdraw these funds within seven dys; otherwise, the funds will be reversed.
  • Call SASSA when payments are rejected or verification is delayed.
