A Foster Child Grant is one of the very few methods of most financial assistance provided by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). It is intended to make sure that children placed into foster care are given proper care and support. SASSA has, therefore, stated that the payment of R1,250 per child month for September 2025 will be made on Thursday, 5 September 2025.
Who is Eligible for the Foster Child Grant?
The grant is meant for children who have been placed under the legal care of foster parents by court order. To be eligible:
- The applicant should be a South African citizen or permanent resident or should be a refugee recognized in terms of the Refugees Act of 1998.
- Both the applicant and the child must reside in the Republic of South Africa.
- The child must be placed with the foster parent through proper legal procedures and is below the age of 18.
- This grant seeks to assist the foster family in providing food, clothing, education, and the vital needs of the child.
The Value of Direct Payment to Beneficiaries
A foster child becomes eligible to receive a direct payment of R1,250 per month. The amount is per child, and in this way, foster parents with more than one foster child will be entitled to receive payments for each child. This helps in sustaining many households on the other hand, thereby reducing the cost of raising a child.
Checking the Status of Your Foster Child Grant
The beneficiary is encouraged to check the status of their grant before the payment date to ensure the smooth processing of the grant payment. Here are some ways you can:
- Log in to the www.sassa.gov.za website with your credentials.
- Dial the official SASSA USSD Code (1203210#) on your cellphone to check payment status.
- Dial the SASSA toll-free number 0800 60 10 11 for assistance.
- Visit the nearest SASSA office with your ID and court documents if you need assistance.
Payment Method Available
There are different methods offered by SASSA to receive the grant:
- Direct deposit into the account of the caregiver.
- Postbank Account to be used for withdrawal.
- Cash pickups at the SASSA pay points designated.
- Approved institutions in case of the foster child.
It would be wise for caregivers to ascertain that the banking details they have so far provided to SASSA are indeed correct to avoid any delays during payments.
