Kaizer Chiefs Announce New Captain: Inácio Miguel Confirms Leadership Change

For the 2025/26 campaign, the club has named Inácio Miguel as their brand-new captain. This decision came after Yusuf Maart left, with Coach Nasreddine Nabi placing great emphasis on Miguel’s leadership and his presence in the squad.

Leaders: From Maart to Miguel

At the end of the last season, Yusuf Maart resigned from the club, with the spotlight cast upon filling that leadership vacuum. Inácio Miguel, with his imposing presence in the defense, was the obvious choice for the role. In choosing him, the club opted for stability and experience in important areas.

Kwinika On the Field

In a loving gesture of support, Miguel shared his intention to surrender the captaincy to Kwinika any time he graces the pitch. According to Miguel, “Kwinika is our ‘madala’, our captain,” referring to a civil nod towards his seniority alongside mutual respect for Kwinika’s unwavering consistency and strength in the group. This was reinforced in the theatrical fashion in the Richards Bay clash recently: the moment Kwinika came on for an injured teammate, Miguel relinquished the captaincy.

Why Kwinika Included Should Wear the Armband?

For Miguel, such a decision is something made instinctively: it was never decreed by the coaching staff but born out of deep respect. Miguel outlined: “He has a big history at this club, and I respect him for that.” He talked about how Kwinika maintains consistency and accumulates resilience, being an example to those young players who may be thrown to the wolves during tough situations on the field.

What This Means for Chiefs Leadership Structure

Such have created a duo-class captaincy in which Miguel remains captain, with Kwinika acting in an on-pitch vice-captain role. That helps to ensure smooth transitions of command and proper coverage of the leadership, keeping the team aligned on their concentration and morale while acknowledging continuity versus legacy. Whether Kwinika acts as starting captain or sits on the bench, this dual structure firmly cements the latter as one of the most respected voices on the pitch.
