Fuel Price Relief In South Africa: What Motorists Can Expect This September

Fuel prices in South Africa are likely to drop in September, giving drivers some relief after the recent price fluctuations. Both petrol and diesel are expected to fall, with the greatest savings expected to come from diesel. This is especially helpful in recent times of increased costs for both households and businesses.

Small Drop in Petrol Prices

Slight decreases in petrol prices are anticipated in September. This drop will be between 11 to 14 cents per litre for grade 93 and between 4 to 12 cents per litre for grade 95. Despite being small, these drops will be of some help to private drivers and taxi operators who rely on petrol for daily commuting.

Diesel Users to Gain the Most

Among all sectors, September’s gains are expected to centre on the diesel sector. An estimate points to a drop in wholesale diesel prices of between 51 and 55 cents per litre, with even greater drops suggested in some estimates. This will be especially critical for the farming, transport, and logistics sectors, which are heavily reliant on diesel. The reduction in diesel prices will, in all likelihood, contribute to reducing the operational costs of goods and services.

Turning the Corner After Diesel Hikes

Diesel has faced a number of successive price hikes over the last few months, putting pressure on numerous businesses and increasing the price of daily essentials, a trend that appears set to ease with the September cut. The anticipated September cut will marks this trend’s end. The market appears to be moving towards equilibrium with the possible over-correction in diesel prices. Petrol has remained stable in 2025, with both inland and coastal stations displaying minimal fluctuations in pricing.

Global and Local Factors at Play

The anticipated drop in fuel’s cost is primarily going to be influenced by a subdued international oil price and a stronger rand. The cost of crude oil globally has dropped, easing the cost of imports. The local currency is a bit stronger in comparison to the US dollar, which also helps in reducing the cost of fuel imports.
