In 2025, drivers from South Africa will have to pay more for both their vehicles and their license renewals. Gauteng and the Western Cape will be especially affected. These increases come as a result of inflation and help in still offering the same level of service in the face of changing administrative expenses.
Provincial Summary: The Variances in Renewal Expenses
Renewal fees differ from one province to another and are calculated based on the vehicle’s tare weight. In April of 2024, fees in Gauteng saw a 6% to 7% increase; for example, licensing a vehicle with a weight between 750 kg and 1000 kg now costs R432 per year. The Western Cape remains the cheapest region, where fees for small hatchbacks start at R390 with an increase of 4% to 5%, while large SUVs go for R1458. KwaZulu-Natal continues to be the most expensive region for vehicle licensing, although they have kept their 2024 fees.
Avoid Accruing Charges for Late Renewal
Renewing your licence late also comes with a catch. Although you have a 21-day grace period to renew after your licence expires, a 10% late fee will be imposed for every month after that on your licence cost. Motorists must also pay any outstanding traffic tickets on their licences.
Renew Digitally: More Accessible, But Costly
We’re happy to report that renewals can now be done digitally. With naTIS Online, you can even renew your licence from the comfort of your own home and have the papers sent to you. Not to mention, the licence renewal services of various banks (FNB, ABSA, Capitec, etc.) and shops (Shoprite, Spar) have been linked to their systems—albeit for an additional fee for the convenience and delivery.
Immediate Actions to Take
Schedule your renewal in advance to avoid any surprise charges or fines:
- Familiarise yourself with the relevant fee for your province—there can be marked differences.
- Make sure to renew on time. You may renew using naTIS or trusted third-party providers; however, third-party service fees must be factored in.
- Settle all your traffic fines so that your renewal goes through seamlessly.
- Look into delivery methods. Queues can be avoided with expedited delivery through banks and shops, which may be pricier.
