South Africa Weather Alert: This weekend, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough seas are forecasted to impact South Africa, with a special focus on the southern and the eastern curved coastal regions. Currently, the Eastern Cape is under a level 2 yellow warning, which indicates the likelihood of an increased threat of gale-force winds and high seas. Tourists and locals near the shore have been advised by the authorities to exercise increased caution and postpone coastal travel.
Storm Alerts: What You Should Know
There is a risk of Small Craft and Beach Warning type winds and gusts wreaking havoc on beach structures and people in the vicinity of water. The South African Weather Service has issued a warning that waves may get as high as 8 meters, which along with the rough seas, may pose a navigation and localized structural damage risk.
Furthermore, the same unstable weather will affect both coastal and inland areas well into Sunday. For instance, Limpopo, particularly around Polokwane and Phalaborwa, could have some morning showers as the system drags cooler air further north. The Western Cape’s Overberg and Garden Route could have some light showers to go with the cooler temperatures. Worcester and Sutherland, which are more inland, are expected to have cold mornings with some fog as well as wind, which could be quite a change from the norm.
Key Concerns for Coastal and Inland Areas
With the weather event predicted for the weekend, there are multiple safety risks to be considered in the coastal communities. From strong winds to damaged shore lines and rough seas for sea based activities, there are a lot of concerns. The forecast also issues a warning for motorists driving on exposed highways and those close to the shore lines. The interior regions should also brace to have a cold and maybe damp weekend with light precipitation showers.
Safety Measures for the Weekend
Both residents and visitors should monitor the weather, and formal calamity-related announcements and avoid travelling during storm times. People near the shore should avoid exposed areas and comply with the instructions of the local authorities. Drivers who travel inland should be careful in the early morning when the roads are covered with fog and during wet patches, especially if they are travelling on hilly or winding roads.
