SASSA has announced the payment of the Older Persons Grant, which is also called the SASSA Pension Grant, at R2,315 in September 2025. This is basically the annual adjustment by the government to help senior citizens meet the ever-growing cost of living, including food, medical needs, and household expenses. Beneficiaries of age 75 and above could be eligible for a slight increase over this amount.
Who Qualifies To Carry On The SASSA Pension?
The SASSA Older Persons Grant is available to South African citizens and permanent residents who fulfill the following requirements:
- Must be 60 years or older.
- Cannot be receiving another grant on your behalf.
- Must not be maintained or cared for in a state-funded institution.
- Must pass a means test- that is, your income and assets must be below the set threshold for the grant.
Married applicants, however, must disclose household income during the evaluation for the grant; this is to ensure that aid goes to those who need it the most.
Filing An Application For The Pension Grant
An Older Persons Grant applicant must apply at the nearest SASSA office. Documents required are:
- South African identity document (Sworn affidavit for persons who do not have one).
Proof of income and assets-out-is evidence of your earnings, such as bank statements. - Proof of residence.
- The marriage certificate of the applicant is needed if the person applying happens to be married.
Application is free, and once approved, the payment is made every month via the nominated payment channel, either direct to your bank, via SASSA gold card, or at pay points designated by SASSA.
Payment Dates For September 2025
The payment dates for September 2025 are expected to follow a regular cycle, which is:
- Older Persons Grant: Usually, this is paid first and paid within the first two working days of the month.
- Other grants such as Disability and Child Support follow after immediately.
- Beneficiaries are urged to check the status of their payments on the SASSA website, WhatsApp line, or through USSD code prior to visiting pay points.
