A review of the social grants is currently underway with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to ensure that only genuine and eligible beneficiaries remain in receipt of the grants. The process is part of SASSA’s continuing commitment to maintain the integrity of the social assistance system and ensure that public money is afforded to those who really deserve it.
Purpose Of The Review
SASSA carries out a review to determine if grant beneficiaries still fulfill the qualifying requirements following any changes in their personal and social circumstances. This includes an investigation to see if the recipient may have gained financially, medically, or otherwise or lost such means. It also looks into issues of having a beneficiary declared dead and then subsequently receiving the grant, beneficiaries moving and not informing the Agency, and the income generated by a beneficiary disqualifying them from receiving certain assistance.
Assurance From SASSA Leadership
The SASSA CEO, Mr. Themba Matlou, elucidated that this check is a measure to keep things in a fair balance, ensuring that bona-fide applicants continue to receive due support. Such beneficiaries have an obligation by law-not to withhold information from SASSA concerning their income or personal circumstances-that if breached may attract remedial measures, such as suspending or lapsing the grant.
The Documents Required For The Review
The beneficiaries are requested to approach their nearest SASSA office for the review with all documentation. Such documents could be:
- South African ID (13-digit barcoded or smart card)
- Proof of income like payslips, pension slips, or affidavits
- Bank statements (recent three months) for all accounts currently active
- Proof of residence like a utility bill or a letter from local authority
- Medical referral reports for disability-related grants
- Marriage, divorce, or death certificates, if applicable
- Birth certificates or school proof for child-related grants
Automation And Future Plans
SASSA is embarking on the modernization of the review system by way of self-service digital platforms. This will reduce the long queues in local offices and grant beneficiaries easier access. It is said that with automation, reviews will be made more efficient, thus reducing the waiting time at offices and averting disturbances to payments.
Income And Asset Thresholds Updated
SASSA conducts means tests to establish eligibility for various grants. New thresholds came into effect in April 2025 to cater for inflation and altered economic conditions. These revised thresholds aim to ensure that grants are really given to those in dire need.
A Call For Cooperation From Beneficiaries
SASSA calls on all beneficiaries to cooperate with the review process and submit all documents required to avert payment delays in the future. Beneficiaries who were affected by this grants review are being urged to visit the closest SASSA Local Office with the needed documents. Delay in responding to any official correspondence from SASSA, however, may further delay payment and could see that beneficiary’s grant suspended or lapsed.
